David John Meyers was born on December 2, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Beatrice and the late John Meyers. Educated in the public Schools of Bedford, Ohio, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and Racine, Wisconsin, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, with a major in German and minors in Sociology and Greek. It was there that he met the love of his life, JoAnn Wenzel, and they were married on August 30, 1970. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Christ Seminary – Seminex, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1974, and has done graduate studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois.
Pr. Meyers was ordained and installed as Pastor of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Richmond Hill, New York, on November 3, 1974, where he celebrated and preached in German, as well as English. After serving seven years there, he was called to be Senior Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Island City (Astoria), New York, where he served from 1981-1993, when he was called to Trinity Lutheran Church and School of Bogota (Bergen County), New Jersey, where he served from 1994 – September, 2006, when he came to Massapequa Park to become pastor of St. David’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 20 Clark Boulevard, Massapequa Park, New York.
His church activities include serving as a conference dean, as a delegate to the National Church assembly that led to the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and teaching New Testament and Introduction to the Bible for Diakonia – a program for the training of deacons in New York and New Jersey.
His community activities range from volunteer counselor at a satellite clinic of Creedmoor Hospital, to Emergency Medical Technician with volunteer ambulance corps, to board member at the Wartburg Lutheran Home in Brooklyn, the Lutheran Center for the Aging in Smithtown, North Brooklyn Mobile Meals, to volunteer chaplaincy at Goldwater and Coler Hospitals, Riker’s Island, and various nursing homes.
Pr. Meyers comes to St. David’s with a great love for Christian education, having served throughout his ministry in congregations with Lutheran schools and pre-schools.
Music is a big part of the lives of Pr. Meyers and JoAnn, his wife of 36 years. They met in a chorus at Valparaiso University and continue to sing with the St. Cecilia Chorus of New York, performing major choral works with orchestra in Carnegie Hall. He also plays guitar, dabbles in bluegrass banjo, and occasionally takes out his trombone for special gigs. Other leisure time activities include hiking, cycling, woodworking, and automobile mechanics, and, recently writing – having collaborated on an illustrated synopsis and reading guide to the Gospels, The Illustrated Life of Jesus, with Hylas Publishing, in Irvington, New York.
The Meyers’ have two adult children: Joel, a graduate of the University of Rochester, currently self employed as a finish carpenter in Avon, Colorado; and Rachel, a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, who is a production editor for John Wiley Publishing in Hoboken, New Jersey.
